Dancing Queen

We had a fun night recently just turning up the IPod and being footloose and fancy free. That is, all of us but the serious and studious older child. (Hmm, sounds much like me growing up)

Happy Maundy Thursday

So I've seen that all over church billboards lately, and other than a really bad pun indicating you don't know which day it is, I had no idea what it meant.

Now I do!

I had the context skills to assume it has something to do with the Easter Holiday, but thanks to John Piper over at Desiring God ministries, I found an explanation:

Here's an excerpt, and you can click on the link above for the whole shebang.

Today is Maundy Thursday. The name comes from the Latin mandatum, the first word in the Latin rendering of John 13:34, “A new commandment (Mandatum novum) I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” This commandment was given by the Lord on the Thursday before his crucifixion. So Maundy Thursday is the “Thursday of the Commandment.”

I would say that Jesus did not replace or change the commandment, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” He filled it out and gave it clear illustration. He is saying,

Here is what I mean by “as yourself.” Watch me. I mean: Just as you would want someone to set you free from certain death, so you should set them free from certain death. That is how I am now loving you. My suffering and death is what I mean by ‘as yourself.’ You want life. Live to give others life. At any cost.
So John says, “By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers” (1 John 3:16). Was Jesus loving us “as he loved himself”? Listen to Ephesians 5:29-30, “No one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.”

In the horrors of his suffering Christ was sustained “by the joy that was set before him” (Hebrews 12:2). And that joy was the everlasting gladness of his redeemed people, satisfied in the presence of the risen king.

Therefore, let us see the greatest love in action during these next 24 hours. “Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end” (John 13:1). And let us be so moved by this love that it becomes our own. “He laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers” This is the commandment. This is the Thursday.

Oh no! I've been tagged!

I realize that could mean many things: it could be (South TX style) that graffiti artists attacked some of our property... no, that's not it. It could be that Anna has learned a new playground game...no, that's not it either.

I've been blog-tagged.
That just means that my dear friend Alisa posted a few notable facts on herself, and now it's my turn! While I did list a few recently, I'll try to come up with a few more.

Here's how it works:
-You have to tag 5 people (you can't tag the person that tagged you)
-You leave them a comment on their blog (‘you’re tagged’ and ‘why’)
-Direct them to your blog for instructions…when you get tagged, you post ten fun facts about yourself!

1. I like to do crafty things. Anything, really, including scrapbooking, building things, putting together furniture, painting, sewing, you name it.

2. I love March Madness. I watch Texas Aggie Basketball when I can, but only during March Madness do I love to watch any and every college game I can. I've got my bracket filled out. Do you?

3. I'm hooked on LOST (the tv show). It's probably not our all-time favorite, but we've never found another tv show that frustrates us so much, yet leaves us on the edge of our seats till the next week. We're convinced that any time a question is answered, two more new ones are asked.

4. I love to read, but time-wise, I don't get a lot accomplished. I have several books on my "to read" list, and several on the "not finished yet" list. I prefer spiritual growth and ministry-related books.

5. I use Google Reader to consolidate the blogs I like to read. I have several friends' blogs I enjoy, as well as several others, including The Resurgence, Church Matters (9Marks blog), Between Two Worlds, Together for the Gospel, and the Discerning Reader, which is (bytheway) an excellent site on measuring whether a book (especially Christianity-related) matches up to the Truth of Scripture.

6. I am consistently in awe of the two precious little ones God has blessed us with. I realize that simply being a parent does not make you a good one, so I have to humbly depend on the Lord for wisdom and discernment constantly. When I do, it makes a difference. When I don't, it's a disaster.

7. When I watch basketball, I wish I had the time and that I was still in good enough shape to constantly play real games. I still shoot around when I can, but I miss the full court, high-energy feel and excitement. Ok, I know it's not too late. Just trying to find the motivation and time!

8. One of the spiritual gifts I've been given is the desire to serve. I love to do anything I can to help, even if I get no credit for it later. On the flip side, sometimes it's difficult to say "no" and I overbook my schedule!!!

9. My "love language(s)" are Acts of Service (surprise surprise) and Quality Time. That means that I feel most loved when someone does even a little thing because they want to serve me, or if I get to spend quality time with someone. Sure, I still like gifts, affection, and affirmation, but the other two are tops on my list. Scott's are Words of Affirmation and Quality Time.

10. If I could have 5 tv stations only, they would probably be: Fox News, Discovery Channel, History Channel, ESPN, and Food Network.

That's it for my 10 facts! Now I tag Mandi, Brittany, Betsy, Cami, and Erin.

We miss you T!

My sister and her boyfriend got engaged in January. Travis is a spectacular guy, and we're excited for their October wedding.

He's a civilian contractor (aerospace engineering) for the Army, and a couple of weeks ago, he left for service in Iraq. He'll be there till July, and we miss him!

(Anna especially, as she flirts with him like crazy!...Don't know how to explain to her in toddler-speak that T is officially off the market)

I must admit, it helps to know the "50 states song". (And it won't accept misspelled state names)

Forget Starbucks

Coffee doesn't have to be purchased simply because of the "commercial experience" anymore, as we're finding out that Starbucks is re-examining their marketing. Did you hear they all closed down for 3 hours the other day to re-train their "baristas"?

That said, I'd like to encourage all of you coffee (and COCOA) lovers that you can drink a warm cup of roasted/chocolatey bliss while knowing that just by buying and drinking coffee you've aided some precious orphans and a sweet family we know!

Our dear friends Vince and Alisa are seeking to adopt a little girl from China (at least 2 years out) and can adopt a child from Ethiopia prior to that. They've teamed up with a coffee company (963 Coffee) that will donate 40% of the proceeds from every bag of coffee purchased through Vince and Alisa's personal blog site! (You can check out the coffee co's website if you wish, but it's easiest to purchase through the blog, because that logs Vince and Alisa as the beneficiaries)

Good things come to those who wait....

This is for you, Betsy!

I apologize to my dear friend who has been BEGGING me to get with the program and post some pictures from December! :)

Turns out that when we were in Canton visiting for the holidays, our wonderful friend Betsy was driving to Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. We absolutely had to meet up halfway there. The mexican food might have been only so-so, but the time together was priceless!

Friday Funny

Have you ever seen a sign or billboard that was just a little "off"?

Little(r) did you know....

A little over a week ago, I posted some trivia about my sweet husband. As promised, I'm continuing the post with some trivia about yours truly.

Did you know?

  • I was a multi-sport athlete in high school. (my thinner days) I played volleyball, basketball, ran cross-country, and participated in track and field: 100 and 350 m. hurdles (my favorite), 400 and 800m relay, 200m sprint (second favorite).
  • Basketball was my hands-down favorite sport, and I was a shooting guard/point guard/forward. During my senior year in high school, my schedule of academic classes didn't allow me to take Girls' Athletics. However, I had an opening during 4th period, and after discussing it with the principal and guys' coach, I was allowed to take Guys' Athletics. (Obviously I used the Girls' Locker Room.) That was the best, most challenging sports experience I had.
  • I love words and word games. In 7th grade, my class would play Boggle using an overhead projector. I didn't win all the time, but my teacher would send me on errands during the games because a couple of students complained if I ever won. :( I also cannot pass up a good pun. Scott would tease and say that only I think they're funny and I shouldn't say them, but he doesn't realize how many I don't voice! ;)
  • Somewhere along the way I learned to say the alphabet backwards.
  • I play piano and took lessons from age 4 till 18, BUT I don't play by ear or by memory very well. Give me some sheet music, however, and I'll be as pleased as punch. (whatever that means)
  • I LOVE to be organized. If I ever buy something impulsively for myself, it's usually something for storage or organization. Putting it into practice, however, is not as easy as it would seem. Given the time to focus on it, I'll be organized. Otherwise, know "it's a work in progress."
  • Music really affects me. The difference between crying/not crying in a movie with a sentimental scene depends on the music. My mom says simply hearing scary music on tv when I was little would affect me greatly.
  • I've never had many really close friends. I'm somewhat introverted that way. In any given situation, I like being around people, but I'm reserved to a good extent. That's something I continue to try to balance out, because I value friendships and the people I've been blessed to know. Ministry life helps me monitor that! Scott pushes me to have that balance too, and I'm grateful.
  • I have a peculiar habit when I eat barbecue. Sure, I could eat it normally, but when presented with the opportunity to eat brisket or sausage, etc., I prefer to take one slice of bread, slice a few pieces of meat, add a few pieces of pickle, some sauce, and perhaps some cheese or pinto beans, then fold it over for a sandwich. Mmmmm. I'm mocked by my family for this obsessive ritual, but I'm addicted to it. :)
  • I LOVE computers, but technology changes so quickly that once I had kiddos, I couldn't keep track. If I had to pick a job at some point, I'd love to work with computers.
  • I once had dreams of joining the FBI or CIA. I'd love to be an analyst or work with computers for them. However, relocating myself to Langley for training doesn't gel so well with being a full time mom and supporting my husband in ministry, which is my actual calling and is truly a joy. I wouldn't trade what I do now for anything!
  • I like to go deer hunting. It's a tradition dating back to my infant days, and it means family time, time in the gorgeous outdoors, and roughing it (a little). I'm not trigger happy, and if we kill a deer, we eat it or give away the meat. The leases that my dad has taken us to have a biologist who manages the population for health and numbers by placing restrictions on what can be hunted. That being said, I have a nice 10 point shoulder-mount hanging in our home office.
  • Last, but not least, I grew up a farmer's daughter. I drove tractors in the summer and worked the cotton module builders. Scott (the city boy) came to work for Dad one summer, which eventually led to us discussing dating and marriage. We left our wedding in a shiny green John Deere tractor (and drove to the limo that was waiting on the opposite end of the parking lot).

And the winner is...

Thanks to all you who contributed to the random poll I held about who would play Scott if a movie were made about the McDonald Family. Drumroll please:

It seems that 90% of respondents feel that Kevin James of King of Queens and Hitch fame would best play the role.

Only one other actor received support, that being Sean Astin of Rudy and Lord of the Rings fame. (10%)

Scott would agree with the results, incidentally! He loves Kevin James!...and Sean Astin.

I think it'd be fun to do a poll about an actress for me, but I have NO ideas for the current me (I might have suggested Helen Hunt for the pre-baby me or a girl from a 90's teen basketball tv show -Danielle Deutscher- for my high-school/college self). Also, Scott won't contribute any ideas, because he's afraid it will turn into the "does this dress make me look fat" argument; suggesting an actress could backfire for him. (Of course I wouldn't be mad, but he still balks.)

So, I'm stalling/shelving the poll. If you think of someone good for me, you can post a comment without risk of backlash. ;)
Otherwise, we'll skip the poll.

He may not have much of a chance, but at least he knows how to laugh at himself! (and when to bow out?)

Anna's Unabridged Dictionary, entry 3

Fasss: (fas) To do something speedily. As in "Fasss fasss fasss fasss"

Happee: (hap ee) To be cheerful: usage-- "Happy, (pause) ha ha!"

Kakh: (kak hh) The sound a duck makes

Kakhoo: (kak hoo) Any crunchy bread product, especially Ritz.

We've mastered the /k/ sound, almost.
Also, the "happy" ha-ha's sound just like the deep voice "ha's" she says at the end of her turn to slide.

Heard near the McDonaldspot: Demanding Wildlife

We've developed a game to keep Caleb involved during meal time. It's similar to 20 questions, and the guessers try to figure out what animal someone is thinking of.

Here is an excerpt from tonight's game.

Pawpaw: Yes, my animal lives in the ocean.

(more questions)
Pawpaw: No, it's not a shark or a whale.

(more questions)
Pawpaw: No, it's not a crab or a starfish.

Caleb: Can it disappear?
Pawpaw: Yes, sometimes.

Caleb: Is it a sea urgent?

Silly Systematic Saturday

I apologize ahead of time to those of you who haven't dealt with Bible classes or Seminary, or such things. You still may find this mildly entertaining, but those of you who have may think this hilarious.

(for the former group, the man whom they sing about is a professor/writer who has compiled a very well-communicated book of theology-- commonly held, Biblically supported beliefs about who God is and Christianity in general)

If you need lyrics, please visit The Blue Fish post from which I discovered this gem.

Friday Footloose Funny

President Bush has been touring nations in Africa, offering assistance and mosquito nets to help combat Malaria. Watch as he follows the lead of Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf (dressed in maroon robe) at a celebration.

Whatever your politics, you have to admit that's cute! Reminds me a little of my dad doing the "Chapman Ranch Shuffle." I love it!

Blechhhhh!

(sounds like "bleck-hhhhh")
I seem to remember that is the sound Oscar the grouch would make when he was disgusted with something.

Well, I'm not a grouch, per se, but I AM disgusted.

I thought I'd do something good for myself. I know I've been sleeping less and staying busy more as of late. I glanced at the bottle of children's chewable vitamins I have for Caleb. These aren't Flintstones, mind you, but they're close. I noticed that the adult dose is the same as the child's dose. I decided to take one and figured my body would thank me.

In my haste to finish other tasks, I chewed it up quickly and moved on. BIG mistake. Have you ever swallowed a big vitamin that just tasted horrible? My prenatal vitamins for Caleb and Anna were that way. Surely the fruit flavors in these kiddo versions would be fine.

Vitamins themselves NEVER taste fine. In fact, because I didn't chase it with water, I'm suffering through the aftertaste, which is strangely similar to the way a wet dog smells.

Blechhh and double blechhhh.

Little Did You Know...

With a tip of my hat to Christine, I'd like to start a two-part post to see just how well you know us. Here are some perhaps little-known facts about Scott.

  • Scott is a movie buff. He can quote one-liners from just about any movie he has seen.
  • Scott played "center" in football while in high school. He also played trumpet in band. He had to choose between football and band. Football won, then he shattered his ankle when a teammate fell on it in a game. So much for football.
  • Scott has nearly the entire Bible Trivia game memorized. Bible Trivia was an event for youth camp in Falls Creek, Oklahoma. His youth group often won.
  • He rarely misses a rerun of Seinfeld. He can quote those episodes like he does movies.
  • Scott sometimes holds up one hand at shoulder level when he is really intent on eating. Palm perpendicular to the table, facing in, fingers up, but curled. No one knows why.
  • Scott reads just about any chance he gets, and can rattle off a whole list of excellent Christian authors.
  • The Lord has gifted Scott in discipling and asking hard questions. In a moment's time, he can discern what direction to take in a conversation, and he figures out (with the Spirit's guidance) just what to say to get at the heart of the matter. (stinks when I want my way for no logical reason!) ;)
  • Scott is the dramatic one of the two of us. When we're together, he's the talker and the most expressive, but he doesn't get sentimental as much. I'm the listener, the calm one, though we're both pretty easy-going. He's good at games like charades, pictionary, etc. (Blue and Green in Cranium).
  • He loves the taste of fruit, but not the texture. Therefore, no fresh fruit, no bananas in banana pudding (but banana flavored pudding is fine), etc.
  • Scott's favorite current tv show is LOST. Now that some questions are being answered, he's addicted.
  • His favorite meal involves some kind of steak and some kind of potato.
  • Scott loves to keep in touch with some of his closest high-school friends. One is a lawyer, one is in the Secret Service, another in the ministry, and another is an overseas executive for JP Morgan. Talk about diverse career paths!
  • Working at the church is not just a career for him; he has a passion for seeing others experience God the way he has, and he lives and breathes what he believes. He's a great daddy and husband, and I'm so grateful for him!

Sure Thing

Caleb has a definite affinity for music and sound. He loves to learn things through song (bible verses, anyone?), and can recognize familiar tunes quickly. Here's an example:

Last night, Caleb was (supposed to be) getting dressed for bed in his room. The tv in the living room was on, and it was on commercial. I noticed, as we were trying to motivate Caleb to hurry, that a common infomercial about a really sticky putty had just come on. Before I could complete a sentence tell Scott to change it, a sweet little face was peering around the corner. He was fixed on the tv with a trance-like gaze, and he immediately said in a trance-like voice, "I LOVE Mighty Putty."

Coughs, Sneezes, and Sniffles, Oh my!

We haven't escaped the cold season even for a single month this winter. Poor Anna has what started as a cold and has progressed to an ear infection, according to our pediatrician. We had a little alarm when, out of the blue last night, she ran a 104 fever. Not to worry though, doctors will tell you now that the number itself isn't dangerous; it is "call the doctor" serious, but not "go to the ER" serious, and that several viruses and the flu have been causing this high of a fever. We were able to get it to break in a reasonable amount of time last night, and now she's just dealing with the runny nose and congestion.

On a lighter note, though, she makes the cutest sound when she sneezes! No achoo around here... She adds the -m sound at the end, which comes out like "Chumm" every time!

Tuesday, February 5

First Sentence

"Want some Juice."

Our sweet girl is putting words together! It's so fun to see her satisfaction when she realizes that she has communicated in a way we understand. I can relate! Have you ever tried to get a point or idea across, and you feel like others are just looking at you blankly?

Way to go, Anna!

Super Tuesday? I'm glad I have till March.

For those of you who know me well, it's no surprise that I like to stay informed in areas of politics. Fox News is a channel I couldn't do without (though I fast from it occasionally). I actually scored 100% on the political awareness quiz on www.dontvote.org. (read the site's mission stmt)

So, as the coverage of Super Tuesday is unavoidable, I find myself considering for whom I will vote. No, I will not tell you straight up, because I have not decided for certain, and today's results may help me decide. On the one hand, there is one candidate who embraces my social conservative stances. Then there's another who is pretty conservative socially, but matches my fiscal conservative views better. Then there's another who claims to do both, yet in reality is fairly liberal, and could potentially be the nominee... (not to mention he flirted quite a bit with my sister at an event she was working at). Voting for one could take needed votes from another, and is there a third that I'd rather not see in office?

I heard some wise advice (second-hand) from presidential biographer Michael Beshloss (thanks, Dad, for passing it on!) . He said that regardless of who was elected, 8 to 11 of the past several presidents have, at some point in their terms, had to make some very difficult decisions that have ensured the survival of the US. Those decisions, however, have cost them their public image and their reputations/legacies as Presidents. He encouraged the crowd on hand to vote for someone who would be able to make those tough decisions and have the experience and humility to do so without considering how they would look afterward. Excellent advice, but that doesn't make my choice entirely clear....

Hence the conundrum. I'm glad that I have until the first week of March, now that I'm residing in a different state. I will pray through my decision for the primary election, and likely support whoever wins the nomination regardless. Will I stress over it or feel dejected like I did in 1992 when I thought the world as we knew it would end? No.

Here's why: It's not because politics don't matter (though they are not of ultimate importance either). It's because I know that ultimately whoever runs this great country is not in absolute control, nor is the congress.

For by him [Christ] all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. Col. 1:16

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Rom. 13:1

So, while I know that God's not out there "rooting" for one candidate's views, I do know that whoever eventually wins, He has in there for a reason. That may bring about good, or that may bring about hard times, but either one will result in God getting the glory. And, since that matches the purpose for why we're here in the first place, I'm good with that, and I'll continue on no matter what.

Anna's Unabridged Dictionary, entry 2

1. wehwee - one of the vegetable variety often seen on video or saturday t.v. acting out stories with a moral message. A cohort of Bob the tomato and Junior Asparagus. Especially used when hugging the plush likeness of that cucumber character.

2. vetaws (veh' tows) - the name of the vegetable series in which wehwee (Larry) and the others sing and act out stories.

3. Veeyo (vee' yoh) - command, meaning "Please turn on this DVD player with something interesting to watch inside. Don't you know that I want to watch now?" Command is often repeated, especially in the car on trips longer than 15 minutes.

Anna's Unabridged Dictionary

Faff: n. (faf) That long-necked yellow creature with brown spots, four legs, and two weird fur-covered horn-things.

Wa: v. (Wah, rhymes with bah as in humbug) "Let me down, I don't want to be held, and I want to get around on my own", also "walk"

Boop: n. (buup, rhymes with look, took, etc.) any variety of printed, bound material, meant to be read at the instance of the spoken word, unless the back-up-and-sit-down has not yet occurred.

Heard and Seen at the McDonaldSpot

Anna learned to slide on her own this week. We have a little Kangaroo Climber from Nanny and Dandy (it's for toddlers), and she can get herself up on the little platform, swing around to a sitting position, and then push herself down the slide. She LOVES it! She giggles at the end every time. The hilarious part is that, due to a song we learned with laughing in the chorus, when she does so, it's a deep sounding literal "Ha ha ha" instead of tee-hees or silly little giggles. Imagine a sweet little girl sliding and ending with a HA!

Heard at the McDonaldSpot

Caleb came home from school Thursday to tell me they had learned about the Ten Commandments in chapel. He said that one of the people on stage was saying silly ones instead of the real commandments, which made it really funny.

I asked him if he learned any of the real ones. Here was his response.

C: No adults up in trees.
Me: (pausing) That was one of the silly ones right?
C: No, that's a real one. No adults in trees because they might fall down and get hurt.
Me: (pausing for quite a while, all while a friend nearby was trying not to laugh)

I figured it out pretty quickly. Have you?

No adultery

After a laugh, he wanted to know what adultery was. I answered in a child friendly way, but I'm curious to know how each of you would have answered a very curious four year old. I'll post my response to him in a comment after you guys give your two cents.

Congratulations are in order!

Several of my friends have great news to report! We celebrate the arrivals of new precious babies to the Hoovers, the Bryces, and the Watts(es)!

McDonaldSpot version 2.008 with readme.txt

Happy New Year to you and yours!

The dawn of the year of our Lord 2008 finds us blogging in the home of First Monday Trade Days as we wrap up our visit with Scott's family. We missed First Monday by a week (the event is held on the weekend that precedes the first Monday of each new month), and while I was slightly disappointed, the trip has been wonderful and relaxing.

Have you made any new resolutions to accompany the new year? Some avoid them because they seem cliche or lack the seriousness required for change. Others show their willpower by keeping them all year long. Regardless, many people would like to change things or introduce new behaviors (workouts, anyone?)

Was reading on your list? Scott and I have compiled a favorite authors list, along with a few specific books that you might be interested in. The nerd in me wants to organize them by genre, then author, then title. The efficient side of me knows that I don't have a lot of time (football is on, the kids are wanting to play games, and the New Years queso dip and snacks are beckoning). So, here goes, and hopefully it's more organized than chaotic:

Favorite Christian Authors and some book titles (with genres included where possible)

a non-exhaustive list

the book titles listed are not necessarily the only books we recommend by that author

  • CS Lewis
  • AW Tozer Knowledge of the Holy, and others
  • Dallas Willard Spirit of the Disciplines, I'm wanting to read The Great Omission: Reclaiming Jesus' Essential Teachings on Discipleship
  • Oswald Sanders Spiritual Leadership
  • Os Guinness Dining with the Devil
  • Wayne Grudem Christian Beliefs:20 Basics every Christian should know, Systematic Theology (mainly theology)
  • Richard Foster Celebration of the Disciplines
  • DA Carson (mainly theology, I think)
  • John Piper Don't waste your Life, Sex and the Supremacy of God, Brothers We Are Not Professionals (many genres)
  • JI Packer Evangelism and the Sovereignty of God, Knowing God
  • Mark Dever Nine Marks of a Healthy Church
  • John MacArthur
  • Ravi Zacharias The Grand Weaver, and many others
  • CJ Mahaney Humility
  • Elisabeth Elliot
  • The Jesus Storybook Bible
  • Teach Them Diligently by Lou Priolo (parenting)

Now, there are probably many that we missed, and I know that I've received good suggestions and guidance from these places also.

The Discerning Reader

GirlTalk search for entries categorized "books" or "reading"

Al Mohler's website Mr. Mohler often discusses good books and critiques others.

Be wise as you select reading material! As a believer, it would sadly be unwise to assume that any book you find in the Christianity section of a bookstore (or a christian bookstore, for that matter) is Biblically accurate and reflects Truth.

Merry Christmas!

As we have celebrated today, my prayer is that the real reason why we celebrate Christmas will not be taken out with the wrapping paper, down off the tree, or off to shelves, wallets, or respective homes.

Praise be to God who did not see fit to let us stay forever separated from Him due to our sinfulness. Thank you God for sending Jesus to come as a lowly human, to live a perfect and blameless life, to suffer all sorts of pain and sorrow and separation for you by taking our penalty, and to defeat death by coming to life again. Glory to God for His mercy and grace, that all we must do to be reconnected to Him is to accept the gift we celebrate now at Christmas... His Son...that whoever believes in Him will not be eternally separated, but will have abundant and eternal life as God's adopted heirs.

Now for a Christmas wish for you and yours (derived from a favorite song and the prayer of St. Patrick)

Christ be with me and within me
Christ behind me and before
Christ beside me and to win me
Christ to comfort and restore
Christ beneath me and above me
Christ quiet or in danger
Christ in hearts of all that love me
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger

Christ in every heart that's broken
Christ in every joy and pain
Christ in every word that's spoken
Christ in sun and mooon and rain

Christ in resting and in rising
Christ the Lord of all my life
Christ to guide me and to seal me
Christ protecting me in strife

Merry Christmas to you all! And to Him be the glory in 2008 and forevermore!

Football Rivalries Part 2

Many Fridays ago, I posted a funny video on college rivalries. I meant to post this next one on Thanksgiving, but somehow that whole week and time since then have been a blur. Here you go, and enjoy!

There's no place like...

HOME for the holidays!

Yes, we're celebrating that our travels will be cumulatively shorter this year (we'll be heading to First Monday territory to see Scott's family) because we now live in the other location to which we usually travel! While living near family was never our intention, nor do we associate God's calling on our life with how close geographically we are to loved ones, it's an unexpected blessing that the Lord chose to lead us here!

But, there is a dual meaning in my post title...

We closed on our house this past Thursday. That, in part, is the reason for my absence from the blogosphere this week! We've been cleaning carpets, wiping down cabinetry, and painting prior to unpacking the storage unit full of our belongings that have been waiting patiently for us for five months! Since we've hit the ground running with ministry every time we've moved, it's another blessing that we've lived with my parents while we were seeking out whether the Lord intended to keep us here. Now, since they're in no hurry to see the kiddos less than what has become normal(and us too, I guess) , we are at liberty to move in one room at a time!

I'm obsessed about organization, but I've found that as we've moved and hit the ground running, our family has grown, our schedules become packed, and opportunities for ministry abound, it's become increasingly difficult to start out organized. I'm so excited about the chance to BEGIN organized instead of playing that dreadful game of catch up.

Oh, and for those of you who may be wondering, here are some specs on our new house...what a blessing!

It is three bedroom, two bath, but has a fourth room which is just smaller than the master. That bonus room has no closet, so it cannot be called a bedroom. However, we're excited to use that room for now as an office/craft room... Sewing and Scrapbooking anyone?

We have a large open livingroom, breakfast area, and kitchen. I'm thrilled that the utility room has space to move around and even room for ironing. We also have a formal dining room, which we will use as a study/sitting area, since the breakfast area has the exact dimensions of the dining room. The patio is stamped concrete and is covered, and there is enough space in the backyard for a swingset. I'll try to post some pictures as we progress with moving in.

We were praying and looking for a home with enough space to comfortably host life groups and other ministry events, and we're so thankful that despite the craziness that ensued with the sellers, we were able to make this house our own (and the bank's, in effect).

Heard and Seen at the McDonaldspot

Caleb walked into the room talking a few days ago and froze mid-sentence. We asked him what he was doing, and when he unfroze, here was his reply:

I was just pretending to be pretend!

House Update

We've continued to look around the city for a home to call our own (while our option period was still going). Even so, we still could not find a home in our price range that stood out to us like the one I posted about before. The sellers continued to be difficult, as it was evident that they'd rather not repair anything, because that would mean spending money. After what amounted to a game of realty chess, they finally agreed to fix the two major things we'd asked for (but not the other 7 reasonable ones). So, with our option period over, the house is ours, provided they complete the repairs and we close as planned. What a relief!

We bit the bullet tonight and purchased a washer, dryer, and fridge, since those things are going with the seller. (cancellable if something prevents the closing) Ouch, but exciting.

I'll keep you updated.

Campaign Funnies

I won't tell you who to vote for, but if you're familiar with some of the lore surrounding Chuck Norris (it's prominent amongst some college students), you'll love this commercial, which is set to appear in regional markets this week!

It's an actual commercial by an actual conservative candidate, who is in 2nd place in the Iowa Caucus polling.

Hunting Report

Just a quick update... we've extended our option period to next week to give them a chance to decide for sure what they can pay for. We looked at several houses and are still not able to find anything we like better...yet. Keep praying for wisdom for us!

I-N-S-P-E-C-T...find out what it means to me...

Sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me...
...wee-oo-wee-oo wee-oo wee-Inspect! Just a little bit....just a little bit.

Ok, so maybe it's only me with the song running in my subconscious. Here's a house hunt update. We like the "house" itself that I posted before, but the inspections turned up a long list of things that need to be repaired, and the house is only 10 years old. We still have 2 days on our option period, and the owners haven't said what they're willing to complete. What to do? It's apparent that they either didn't inspect it on their own to begin with, or their inspector did a shabby job (or maybe the house has really gotten worse over the 2 years they've owned it).

So, while we await their answer, it's on with the house hunt, just in case we have to jump ship. There are not many homes with the amenities/structure we desire in (or below) our price range... they must be quick sellers...they exist, but are not for sale. Be praying that we'll be wise in our investment. (and in which house we choose! The decision on the current one has to be made tomorrow!!!)

Friday on-time Funnies

In light of our house-hunting of late, here are a few encouraging illustrations...(?)

Your house as seen by:

Yourself:

Your buyer:

Your lender:

Your appraiser:

Your tax assessor:

Well, what would you inspect?

Today is a big day for us. We have made an offer on a house in cc, and it appears that in Texas, acceptance of the offer terms doesn't lock you in like in Missouri. Instead you can put $50 towards an "option period" in which you can do inspections. If in that 10 day period, you find something wrong, or just get the heeby-jeebies about your decision to buy for any reason, you can back out, giving the owner the $50 as a consolation prize. Otherwise, inspections are completed and your $50, held in "trust", goes toward your closing costs.

So, we're spending the morning with Inspectors and their Gadgets toward that end. Would you like to see a couple of pictures of the house?

Trip for Two

Back in August, Scott and I got to take our first-ever trip alone since Caleb was born. (Thanks Mimi and Pawpaw!) We spent two evenings in nearby San Antonio, eating some authentic mexican food and enjoying the atmosphere of the Riverwalk. I hope the pictures I took make you want to visit!

Treasure Map...

Scripture tells us that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also... So does what I treasure consist of the earthly and temporary, or is it what will last, even when I'm done here on earth? (Matthew 6:19-21)

As our church begins a journey of seeking to expand its reach and effectiveness, we are going through The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn. Just when you think you're growing and learning so much about areas in your life that can better glorify our Lord, here comes a reminder of how entrenched we get into our materialistic culture!

This has been especially challenging as we desire to give above the tithe that God requires, and at the same time we're looking for a home to buy. We're having to consider our needs, our priorities, and whether the decisions we make reflect an attitude of cheerfully giving or simply storing up treasures here that we won't be able to take with us when we're gone. Pray for us as we seek to be teachable!

"Has Friday already come and gone?" Funnies

(Wow, I'm not as consistent with this as I thought I'd be...)

Heard in our household:

Mama, I'm bored.
You have your tent set up right here in the living room. Why don't you make up something imaginary to do in it?
Awww, Mama, imaginary STINKS.

I have never heard Caleb talk that way before, but I recognize the phrase, and boy howdy am I glad that I don't use other choice words... you never know when it'll be mimicked by your dear sweet little children!

"Oh Says-Anna" Oh don't you cry for me...

My last regular post was about some of the displays of opinion that we've seen from Caleb lately. Let me enhance your glimpse of our family life by filling you in on the latest display from Anna.

We're excited to watch how Anna is growing and developing. Here is a partial word list:
  • Mama, Daddy, MehMeh (much like mama) for Mimi, Pawpaw, Dayduh (Caleb),
  • hi, ball, cheese, uh-oh,
  • teetoo (thank you), ah-duh(all done), puh (for "up" when she wants to be carried),
  • boo (peekaboo), toe, eye, ear, bow (mouth but with a b), doh (nose),
  • wah (walk), many animal sounds, and several other partial words for foods, etc.

Then there's the show of frustration when she doesn't get what she wants. Picture this with me if you would... She crinkles her face, shakes her head from side to side, then reaches behind her ears and flicks her hair forward to her face, saying a rather emphatic "Ohhh!"

This is usually a one time sound and motion, unless the severity of the offense against her warrants another.

Friday Funnies

So, this definitely was NOT me, but do you ever feel like even the simplest things go wrong some days?

but mama...

Caleb is embracing his fours with gusto. That includes loving his preK teacher (crush!), making friends more easily than in previous years, discovering more emotions and expressions, and, well, arguing. Yes, arguing.

My sweet boy always has a better plan or idea. When his agenda is interrupted, I know about it simply because his brow is deeply furrowed, he utters some guttural sound in frustration, and I'm likely to see a physical display of some sort. Not your laying-down-and-kicking-and-screaming variety, but a display, nonetheless.

Take this weekend for instance. We've learned previously about good stewardship (taking care of things whether they belong to us or not), respecting those in charge of you, and we are working on responding calmly to frustration. This scene opens at my mom's dining room table.

Me: Caleb, it's time to get down from the table and go (insert task here).

Caleb: (ignores)

Me: Please put your drink down and (do task) now. When you obey quickly, you will not get any bad consequences.

Caleb: (grunts) (slams cup down on table...big no-no on Mimi's easily scratched wooden table)

Me: (gets on his level for a serious conversation about obedience, stewardship, and acting angrily)

Caleb: But Mama, I was just putting the cup down fast so you would be prouder of me sooner.

My mom and I tried desperately to stifle our grins while trying to maintain our serious gazes.

I laugh inwardly because of the cleverness of his justification, but at the same time I'm reminded how often I do the very same thing when talking to the Lord...

Friday Funnies

Well, the poll has officially closed, and the official winner for the weekly humor post name is: Friday Funnies. Thanks for communicating your opinion with me; now watch this clip on communication...

Little LAMM on Leave

Our little business venture has been on hold since the spring. Relocating to Texas has stalled things a bit, and I'm mulling over ways to better reach consumers, and possibly adding/switching products. I still want to market to moms, and for now, I want to still have paintings available. However, I want some feedback! Here are some items I'm considering: embroidered personalized burp cloths, and oilcloth (wipe-able) bibs. To all you moms out there who may be reading this, what items might you find yourself looking to buy as baby shower gifts or for your own precious one? Comment, please!

Replaced with the more efficient...

I'm de-commissioning the book blog I started in favor of recommending a new one! Are you looking for a site that reads and reviews the latest books? Try Discerning Reader; the editors review a variety of books with the goal of promoting books that honor God and helping believers sort through the plethora of published material vying for your attention. Expect a bold (but not intended to be harsh or judgmental) take on the content and value of each book. Whether you agree fully or struggle with their take on a book, prepare to be challenged on what internal filter you use when choosing reading material!

Friday Funny

I'm considering adding a section for Fridays, much like the girls at girltalk do. Just a little pick-me-up for your day!

Showers -- I could take them or leave them

So we've had an overabundance of rain this year in South Texas. That's not a problem if all I'm seeking is lower temperatures and a green yard.

Unfortunately (or fortunately?), though, this farmer's daughter is all too well acquainted with the faith walk that is dry land farming. We depend on the Lord to bring rain in the
growing season and keep things dry for the harvest...or to provide in some other fashion if that scenario doesn't play out in His will according to the needs of the crops. The latter is exactly where we find ourselves this year.

After the timely spring rains, the farmers in this area were looking at some of the best grain sorghum and cotton crops in 30 years. After July's, August's, and September's rains, however, the farmers are praying they can get a non-rainy moment and fields dry enough to avoid getting the heavy machinery bogged down -- with the hopes that they will be able to salvage enough to break even this year.

From a spiritual perspective, we fully understand that the Lord will provide for all our needs according to His riches in glory (as we follow Him). We are confident that He will provide in times of hardship. We still pray that the rains will stay away, though!

This summer, between showers, I was able to video a little bit of the grain (sorghum, aka milo) harvest. Would you like to see it? The video shows the combine (COM byne) harvester and the tractor pulling the grain buggy, which collects the grain once the combine gets full.

Did you notice a familiar face on the tractor driver? :) We were thankful for our track-tractors this year, because they pack down the soil less (packed down soil hampers next yr's growth), and because they don't get stuck in the mud as easily. We always had a tractor (minus the buggy) ready with a long chain, since the combines got stuck often...especially with a hopper full of freshly harvested grain!

Here are a few pictures to show the combine-to-grain-buggy unloading process...

Bring the Rain?

Scott had another excellent post on his blog . After that post, we discovered a song that had already been playing for a while on Christian radio. It's by MercyMe, and is appropriately titled "Jesus Bring the Rain." Can I share some of the lyrics with you?
I can count a million times ~ People asking me how I
Can praise You with all that I've gone through
The question just amazes me ~ Can circumstances possibly
Change who I forever am in You
Maybe since my life was changed ~ Long before these rainy days
It's never really ever crossed my mind
To turn my back on You oh Lord ~ My only shelter from the storm
But instead I draw closer through these times
So I pray
Bring me joy, bring me peace ~ Bring the chance to be free
Bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know there'll be days ~ When this life brings me pain
But if that's what it takes to praise You...
Jesus bring the rain.
I am yours regardless of ~ The dark clouds that may loom above
Because You are much greater than my pain
You who made a way for me ~ By suffering Your destiny
So tell me what's a little rain?
So I pray...
and the song continues, then ends with a prayerful, worshipful tag "Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God Almighty". (song copyrighted by MercyMe, http://www.mercyme.org/)
I can't tell you what a blessing the heart attitude and lyrics of the song have been to me. With all that we've experienced in the last year and a half (or two), and with the changes that have come as recently as June, I cling to the truth that Scripture teaches us about our Lord.
While I have not arrived or attained, and while I'm sure that my conduct during difficult times has not been spotless, I am learning through both hindsight and the continuing rain what it means to be crucified with Christ.

I'm presently doing a study on Galatians compiled by a famous Christian speaker. In it, she shares ten characteristics of the life illustrated by Galatians 2:20. "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."
Of those ten, I'll share a few with you to encourage and challenge you, should you seek to grow deeper in your relationship with the Lord:
  • Like the disciples were clueless in John 16 about the events facing Christ, few will understand if you seriously decide to live a life crucified to self and alive in Christ.
  • You must be willing to drop your own personal will and plans and seek Him with all your heart in order to live out the plans God has for you according to Jer. 29:11-13.
  • There will be times when your dignity is shattered, and you may not be able to prove to others that your decision to stand firm in the Lord truly was the right way to go.
But if we are to truly choose victory in our battle (daily) with sin, we have to choose to die to ourselves-- just as Christ did in fulfilling God's plan for salvation.
All that to say that we can't expect our days to be rainless if we're following Christ. It's more a matter of being sensitive to where the Lord is leading and to what the Lord wants to teach us through the stormy times. I pray that I will continue to give up myself in order to allow the Lord to work in and through me, so that others can taste and see that the Lord is good!

bring me joy, bring me peace, bring the chance to be free
bring me anything that brings You glory
And I know there'll be days when this life brings me pain
but if that's what it takes to praise You, Jesus bring the rain.

Beware the Towel Walker

I created this video today while Caleb was doing some extra work to earn a little hard cash. Hilarious! This is not the first time Anna has done this...

And just in case your video didn't load well, here are some still shots:

Bangs (but no booms or crashes)

Anna had her first haircut in July. Of course, being in Corpus warranted that we visit the salon of the stylist who has cut my hair all my life...Adolfo Salon (Adolfo is the stylist) on Alameda St.

Adolfo had the cure for the cute blond shagginess that was irritating Anna at 14 months... and she did so well!

Disconnect No More

My stack of pictures to post has been growing since we've moved back to Texas. I have things to post dating back to May!

Fortunately though, we discovered our long-lost camera cord, and now I can transfer pictures to Blogger via my dad's computer (ours is still packed). I'll try not to overload you with too many at a time! ;)

Hiatus Schmiatus

Please accept my humble apologies for going nearly 2 months without a post. Here are a few of the things that have happened over that time period, and I hope to elaborate on some of them soon (as soon as I'm able to hook up my PC):

  • Caleb finished his AWANA Cubbies year at church.
  • Caleb celebrated his 4th birthday, with a Chuck E Cheese party in MO and a dinosaur "party" in Texas over the Memorial Day Holiday.
  • We visited the Texas State Aquarium.
  • The Lord brought to a close the long process that clamored for our attention for now, and we officially began the process of moving away from Missouri: packing, putting the house on the market, announcing to our church, saying tearful goodbyes, having goodbye parties, lots of hugs, et cetera.
  • God sold our house.
  • We left Springfield, MO for the last time as residents, but not the last time as visitors!
  • We drove halfway to our new destination and stopped in to stay with Nanny and Dandy, barely missing First Monday.
  • We drove the rest of our trip (7.5 more hours) on the Fourth of July and parked our little U-Haul in Mimi and Pawpaw's driveway.
  • After a minor fiasco, arranged for our belongings to be moved successfully from MO to here in a record 13 days. (I'll get back to you on whether everything actually gets here.)
  • Anna decided that her reason for existence was table food (finally!), i.e. Mimi's rolls.
  • Grain harvest began.
  • Scott's new ministry opportunity began.
  • We had an interview?! for Caleb's Pre-Kindergarten class.
  • Anna got her first haircut, aka bangs.

Peak your interest? More to come as we tie up loose ends/cords... :)

Four Years Tall

We're proud of our sweet boy, who incidentally just finished preschool today and has his birthday on Saturday. We recently had a conversation about how Anna just had her one-year birthday. Caleb's astute observation was, "Mama, soon I won't be three anymore; I'll be four years tall."

I'm grateful for the progress Caleb has made this year and how he's handled this year's challenges. He is growing up in the blink of an eye, so I thought I'd slow things down, if just for a moment, with a recap of the past four tall years.

Wednesday, May 16

Fifty-two...

Not a dominoes game (umm, that's 42), nor the price of a new outfit. Not the number of cards in a deck, nor the number of toys on our floor after Caleb and Anna emptied her toy basket in the living room today before we left for church (but close!).

Fifty-two is the number of Tuesdays that have passed since our sweet girl officially joined our family and lay, blinking at us, swaddled in her hospital blanket. Anna turned 1 today! While she was oblivious to the significance of today (and probably wondered why so many different voices sang at her from Mama's phone throughout the day), I can't help but recount some of the events of her first year:

coming exactly on her due date despite the threat of induction, sleeping through the night early on, smiling with squinty eyes and scrunched-up face, squealing as she discovered what her voice can do, finally rolling over, refusing to continue to roll over, clapping (loudly!), crawling at 11 mo, tooth at 11 1/2 mo, fully mobile shortly thereafter.

I thank the Lord for the first fifty-two, and I can't wait to see what He has in store for the fifty-two's to come!

Monday, May 14

...But I'm Not Tired...

Anna has had a general willingness to rest and stay asleep without too much protest. However, now that she's mobile, it's a different story. She needs a much longer wind-down routine, and she doesn't like it so much when I prep her for nap and lay her down in bed. Today, after listening to her cry some in protest, play a little, then cry a little (checking on her all the while), she finally went to sleep.

Of course, I moved her to a more comfortable position, but only after snapping two pictures!

Monday, May 7

Roughing It

The end of April brought a special treat for Caleb...
his first camping trip!

Scott took several of our college students camping in the Mark Twain National Forest, and Caleb went along. We packed his sleeping bag, a change of clothes, snacks, and curiosity, along with a healthy dose of "do not run off from Daddy" and "do not touch spiders or other weird insects." We prepped him for the lack of bathrooms and talked about the smart way to be around a campfire. He was raring to go! The trip was to be Friday afternoon to Saturday noon. If not for the rain that came the first hour and a half, it would have been absolutely perfect. (Luckily, we packed Uno, Go Fish, and some other diversions). Caleb had SO much fun!

Here's a pictorial smorgasbord for you to feast on...

All I want for Cinco de Mayo is...

una diente por mi hija!

Anna cut her first tooth this weekend (bottom right center), and today it's really poking through for the first time! Bottom left center and Top right center are not far behind.

No more "Anna, the toothless wonder".

I'll post pictures when I can manage to catch her with them showing! (Good luck, right? That tongue is always out!)
